A song going backwards…

The concept for my three posts was to play with narrative structure. I posted three sections of an original song on Instagram but in reverse. I started at the end and then made my way to the beginning. One part that I really enjoyed about it is that on Instagram if someone is reading from left to right, the story appears in forward motion even though it was posted backwards. I’d say because of this the social media platform helped my idea, which was to disrupt the way people normally relate to narrative on Instagram.

I’ve been trying to tame the bitter of the winter that has been given... but I can’t keep on lying I know... That I’m medicine on your tongue Medicine you do not want But medicine on your tongue.... There’s no denyin’ dandelion....

I’ve been trying
to tame the bitter of the winter
that has been given...
but I can’t keep on lying

I know...
That I’m medicine on your tongue
Medicine you do not want
But medicine on your tongue....

There’s no denyin’ dandelion....

I know... That I’m medicine on your tongue Medicine you do not want But medicine on your tongue.... There’s no denyin’ dandelion.....

I know...
That I’m medicine on your tongue
Medicine you do not want
But medicine on your tongue....

There’s no denyin’ dandelion.....

there’s no denyin’ dandelion…

there’s no denyin’ dandelion…

I chose colored pencil for my visual representation of my posts because another theme in this project is the contrast of black and white with color and what that represents. I thought it would be interesting to explore the aesthetic of the stark black and white in the video in put against a burst of color in the drawn aspect. This represents the inner and the outer world. Outside of myself, the way people perceive me on social media, feels like a shell compared to who I actually am. The hand drawn element of the story visualization represents the truth that the inner world holds that can be hard to convey on digital social platforms. The main tension I felt in this process is whether or not the piece would ‘make sense’. Once I released myself of the need for it to ‘make sense’, that perceived issue transformed into an opportunity for the piece to simply be itself, which in a small way gave me permission to be more of myself.
